US DOE Midwest Regional Weatherization Conference

LOAD 7 - CFL Persistence & Savings

Thursday, August 17, 2006  ·  10:20 AM - 11:50 AM

Compact fluorescent light bulbs are a common measure in weatherization programs today. Many factors impact whether or not the predicted savings occurs. Field research has confirmed that bulbs are not always installed properly, or are installed in fixtures that are rarely used. Some products fail prematurely; some are removed; and in multifamily dwellings, lights may be subject to vandalism. Explore the limitations of certain bulbs and installations to avoid. Find out how to increase the likelihood that the bulbs your program installs last and provide cost effective savings. Explore the difference of projected and actual savings in the Ohio EPP program.

By attending this session, participants will

  1. Understand how to identify reliable products in terms of bulb life expectancy and lamp lumen maintenance
  2. Be aware of program design and equipment procurement decisions that will likely impact program cost effectiveness
  3. Recognize the importance of the assessment, and staff or contractor interaction with the client as a critical part of cost effective implementation
