HEAL 8 - Can You Name Six Harmful Soil Gases?
Thursday, April 26, 2007 · 10:40 AM - 12:20 PM
What’s a soil gas? Why should I care? Well, most soils are forty percent void and sixty percent dirt. The bigger the voids, the easier it is for air to move around underground. Oops! It is not all air – there are sources of radon, methane, and chemicals down there too! In most low rise buildings, one to five percent of the make-up air comes in from below grade. In unusual conditions it can be as extreme as twenty percent.
By attending this session participants will
- Name six sources of underground air contaminants that have been known to cause problems in buildings
- Identify the sources of suction that draws soil air into houses
- Understand the two common fixes for soil gas problems
Keyword(s): building pressurization, indoor air contaminant, soil depressurization, soil gas, ventilation
