ENCL 4 - High R Walls - Differing Perspectives
Thursday, April 22, 2010 · 8:30 AM - 10:00 AM
To achieve low to zero energy homes, the thermal insulation of the wall assembly must be significantly increased. Various strategies can be employed, and they all have pros and cons. In this presentation, an architect and an engineer will spark a lively discussion on several different strategies for new construction high R walls and when they might be best employed. Prepare to go beyond the traditional 2X6 wall. Bring your knowledge and experience, as there is no one right answer (although there will be some strong opinions in the room).
By attending this session, participants will
- Understand some of the different strategies that can be used to go beyond a R-19 wall assembly
- Explore durability issues associated with various types of wall assemblies
- Discover the variables that go into critically evaluating wall systems such as cost, constructability, durability, energy performance, interfacing with other systems (windows, doors, roof, floor, foundation), and risk
