Home Performance Best Practice Protocols

How should you run a home performance business? How should you do a home diagnosis, propose improvements, and do the repairs needed? In fact, we all do it differently and without industry wide agreement. This means more uncertainty, liability, and eventually higher insurance costs as well as uneven performance. In a project for the California Energy Commission, the presenters developed a comprehensive set of protocols for home performance contracting business practices and field work procedures. These could be a basis for a national discussion leading to some standard guidelines for contractor use. Hear an overview of the protocol set, followed by a discussion and critique by another experienced professional not involved in the CEC project.

By attending this session, participants will

1. Learn why the home performance contracting industry needs more consistent practices and guidelines

2. Get acquainted with the set of home performance contracting protocols developed for CEC

3. Understand the pros and cons of the CEC protocols and how more national consensus could be developed
