ACI Home Performance Conference 2010

PATH 6 - Balancing the Investment: Enclosures, Mechanicals, & Renewables

Thursday, April 22, 2010  ·  1:30 PM - 3:00 PM

Three panelists with German surnames will propose their position on the topic of optimizing the investment to achieve the best results. When push comes to shove, and the budget is not infinite, where and how do you make the decision of balancing the investment to achieve a very high performing home? With climate as a consideration, how do you decide how deep to go with the investment in an ultra efficient building enclosure, the best possible mechanical systems, or oddles of renewables? Is there enough difference between an R 30 and an R 60 wall to justify the effort to get there?

By attending this session, participants will

  1. Appreciate the variety of technical and societal issues captured in the question, “When should one switch from adding more foam underneath a basement slab to investing in additional photovoltaics?”
  2. Understand some of the basis for the difference of opinions expressed
  3. Wonder if three building geeks can agree on anything related to buildings or otherwise
