100,000 Utility Bills Later: New Home Program Results

The monthly utility consumption for approximately five thousand homes in Phoenix, Arizona was statistically analyzed. The sample was divided into three categories based on the standards by which they were built: code (no energy standards); EPA’s ENERGY STAR® homes program; and an energy bill guarantee program. The variables examined include kWh/therms energy usage history (1-5 yrs), home type (code built, ENERGY STAR®, bill guaranteed), square footage, house orientation, HVAC SEER, and age of home.

By attending this session, participants will

1. Find out how the energy consumption differs between these three categories of homes

2. Understand the study’s methodology

3. Discuss and interpret the study’s finding and its relevance to other regions of the country and housing styles

Keywords: consumption, ENERGY STAR, evaluation, guarantee program, hot climate, HVAC systems, measured results, methodology, new construction
