AVE 3 - Insulating Existing Homes: Treating Them from the Outside

Wednesday, October 08, 2008  ·  3:00 PM - 4:30 PM

There's only so far you can go with adding wall cavity insulation, attic insulation, and air-sealing to the existing building envelope. To achieve really dramatic performance improvements in existing homes (of the magnitude needed to achieve stabilization of global carbon emissions) you need to “think outside the box” and add insulation to the outside. Exterior insulation minimizes thermal bridging, provides opportunities to double or triple the R-value of a wall or roof assembly, and reduces air leakage. The remodeling industry needs to start thinking of any addition, siding job, or roofing job as a potential exterior insulation job too. In this session, you'll learn how to analyze whether a house is a good candidate for this treatment, options for applying the exterior insulation, and strategies for incremental whole-house superinsulation retrofit projects.
