DEEP 4 - Positive Net Energy Homes: The Passive House Concept

Thursday, February 05, 2009  ·  8:30 AM - 10:00 AM

Examine the necessity of carbon neutral / positive net energy home design goals (versus the goal of zero energy homes) in an attempt to stabilize the climate. Explore the elements of Passive House design including continuous insulation, airtightness, thermal-bridge free construction, and balanced ventilation with heat recovery. The Passive House concept is an economically feasible way to reach the zero emissions / positive net energy goals.

By attending this session, participants will

1. Be able to apply the Passive House metrics and understand how they are used to define a Passive House
2. Recognize the basic envelope design principles for a variety of climates
3. Understand how the minimized mechanical systems requirements for Passive Houses are an integral component of the system and enhanced performance
