Don't Park in the Living Room

The majority of houses built in the US each year include attached garages. A significant portion of the infiltration air drawn into the house comes from the garage. Careful thought and details should be applied to the garage design to separate it from the house including air sealing, duct sealing, and pressure balancing.

By attending this session, participants will

1. Realize that creating a room in the house for an automobile and other polluting elements is not a good idea

2. Understand that there should be a significant separation between the living space and the garage

3. Examine methods to accomplish that separation

Keywords: air sealing, backdrafting, building envelope, building science, carbon monoxide, combustion appliance, duct leakage, garage, health and safety, IAQ, depressurization, mechanical ventilation, pressure boundaries, techniques
