AVE 1 - Deep Energy Reduction & the Existing Homes Sector

Given the urgency of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, it is time to re-examine our assumptions about the levels of energy reductions that are achievable in existing homes. As a pioneering leader in the building science approach to improving home performance, ACI (Affordable Comfort, Inc.) convened a summit, July 11 – 13, 2007 in San Francisco, CA to undertake the challenge of creating and clarifying the vision of deep energy savings (70 - 90% reduction in total energy use) in existing single family and multifamily dwellings through a combination of technical interventions and behavioral choices.   The result of that summit is a GUIDELINES PAPER that will be available in August of 2008.

 ACI’s immediate recommendation from the 2007 summit was that federal and state governments, utilities, and other industries make a substantial and immediate effort to develop comprehensive strategies that: ¹

• Start by assuming that net zero energy and carbon neutrality are achievable in existing home
• Maximize investments in conservation, efficiency, and renewable energy and non-energy sources
• Accurately value the energy and non-energy benefits of deep energy reduction
• Identify the opportunities to reduce the costs of deep energy reduction package

The 2008 ACI New England Conference will bring together key policy makers and program implementers from each of the New England states to discuss what each state is doing to meet its energy independence and carbon reduction goals.  Attendees will have an opportunity to provide feedback into program design and implementation strategies for each state.

 

The ultimate outcome of this forum will be to compile participant feedback and have it accessible on the ACI website.
