Panel: Real vs Rated Energy Use

Don’t over-promise what you cannot deliver! For nearly a decade new and existing home energy efficiency programs have been operating, providing ratings and energy use estimates. This session focuses on the inherent difficulties involved with the practice; the fundamental assumptions and numerous variables that can effect measured versus estimated energy usage and savings, and provide an opportunity to discuss the market value or applicability of providing this information to builders, homeowners, and the buying public.

By attending this session, participants will

1. Explore issues regarding estimated versus measured energy use in residential construction

2. Begin to understand the differences between measured usage/savings and estimates provided by standard algorithms and rating software programs

3. Discuss the applicability and market value of providing rated energy use estimates in light of potential differences, assumptions, and the difficulty in accurately measuring the numerous variables that impact estimated versus measured energy usage

Keywords: accuracy, energy efficiency, estimates, evaluation results, HERS, measures, ratings

Type: 100 Minute Session
