HEAT 3 - ACCA S: It Doesn't Stand for Secret

Thursday, March 04, 2010  ·  3:30 PM - 5:00 PM

You have heard of ACCA's Manual J and probably Manual D, but what about Manual S? As the title implies it doesn't stand for "secret", it's there for "selection". An air conditioning systems' efficiency, sensible heat ratio (SHR), and total capacity hinge on the amount of air the system is moving. Manual S shows us how to calculate SHR, system airflow, and then how to use manufacturers' application data to select the proper equipment. Manual S replaces the guessing at what size equipment to use after doing a heat loss or gain calculation. Calculating SHR is a lost art in the residential HVAC industry. It's not hard to do, and can give you a better understanding of how air conditioning systems function.

By attending this session, participants will

  1. Learn how duct design is one giant compromise
  2. Explore how myths are perpetuated in duct design and how to replace them with facts
  3. Utilize heat loss or gain calculations for properly sizing systems
