WC 4 - Duct Diagnostics: Level 3
Tuesday, October 24, 2006 · 3:30 PM - 5:00 PM
Duct systems are often the improper size for the equipment installed, the thermal load of the house, individual room needs, or all of these. If such systems are sealed or insulated without correcting these problems, comfort, delivered capacity, and / or mechanical performance can suffer. Learn to determine the size (in cfm and tonnage) of supply and return trunks, ducts, and grills, and whether that is acceptable. The impact of supply register selection and placement on room air distribution and comfort will be illustrated, and the critical importance of well-installed duct insulation and vapor barriers will be emphasized.
By attending this session, participants will
1. Find out how to quickly determine the size (in tonnage or cfm) of existing supply and return duct systems
2. Understand the impacts on comfort and the mechanical performance of undersized return ducts and grills, and some practical repair options
3. Learn about the impact of supply register selection on room-air distribution and comfort
4. Understand the importance of adequate thermal protection and effective vapor barrier on duct performance
