TPM 09N - Austin's New "Town in a Town" Tour

Tuesday, April 20, 2010  ·  1:30 PM - 5:30 PM

How can a city promote the redevelopment of changing urban areas in ways that improve the local economy and tax base, encourage community and diversity, and do so sustainably? Learn how Austin redeveloped 700 acres of prime real estate through a public / private partnership to create Mueller--a walkable, mixed-use community with extensive parkland and 100% green-rated buildings, including film studios, thousands of homes and apartments, and the first LEED-Platinum hospital in the world. This course gives you an overview of the process for getting there, with emphasis on Austin Energy Green Building’s role.

By attending this session, participants will

  1. Find out lessons learned by all parties- private, government, utility, nonprofit - to bring such development to fruition
  2. Learn how a green building program worked with a developer, architects, builders, and mechanical contractors to assure a high green standard
