ThPM 05 - Moisture Physics (Advanced)

Thursday, April 30, 2009  ·  1:30 PM - 5:30 PM

Moisture physics is explained in practical terms for advanced practitioners. How do house wraps work? How and why does wood store moisture? Why does concrete crack when it dries? When is plywood a good vapor barrier and when is it not? What is going on in all those computer models?
By attending this session, participants will
  1. Understand the four different states of moisture, the four moisture transport mechanisms, and the four moisture sources
  2. Explore moisture storage mechanisms in materials and their significance for rot, swelling, cracks, stains, mold, etc.
  3. Investigate the technical causes behind common problems such as peeling paint, construction moisture, concrete slab curl, housewrap and building paper behavior, etc.
