HEAL 4 - Unvented Gas Heaters, Fireplaces, & IAQ

Wednesday, April 29, 2009  ·  8:30 AM - 10:10 AM

Unvented gas fireplaces are frequently found in homes. There has been a lot of controversy over the indoor air quality implications of their use since they emit carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, and water. This session presents research results from field measurement of these appliances, ranging in age from brand new to fifteen years old. Comparisons to published standards and guidelines are provided, as well as implications for weatherization programs.

By attending this session, participants will

  1. Explore the pollutant concentrations in homes with unvented gas fireplaces
  2. Understand how these levels compare to published thresholds
  3. Learn about limitations for assessing these appliances within weatherization programs
