SUST 2 - Integrating the Technical, Design, & Lifestyle Components of Sustainable Design

This presentation will examine the role of lifestyle and design considerations in achieving energy efficient and more environmentally sound housing. The relative importance of different components of housing will be compared based on recent research into the effects of neighborhood design, unit design, size and layout, conservation practices, building envelope and equipment. Examples from the architectural practice of the presenter will be provided including a new aboriginal residential neighborhood, an affordable townhouse project, a net zero energy use fractional ownership resort, remodeling of a 100 year old single family home, and a three unit condominium building.
By attending this session, participants will
- Better understand the relative importance of technical, design, and lifestyle factors in the overall environmental impact of housing
- Examine techniques to reduce environmental impact through neighborhood planning, housing design, and conservation practices
- Consider how these concepts can be integrated into policy, planning, and technical programs
