ACI Home Performance Conference 2008

Field Reseach & Evaluation

This workshop features research results on the performance of conditioned and vented crawl spaces in new homes in three climates. In the Northwest study, conditioned and vented crawl spaces with and without heating ducts in new homes were monitored through two heating seasons. In a mixed-humid climate, forty vented crawl spaces were examined, documenting moisture and fungal characteristics and showing that there is substantial transmission of air and fungus between the crawl space and the house.

By attending this session, participants will

  1. Hear the results of recent research involving conditioned and vented crawl spaces in marine and cold climates of the Pacific Northwest and mixed-humid climates of the Southeast
  2. Gain understanding of the issues involved in decisions about crawl space construction in different regions
  3. Learn about energy impacts of conditioned crawl spaces in heating dominated climates
  4. Find out about the indoor air quality impacts of crawl spaces on living space
