RES 6 - Exterior Duct Leakage in Northern Homes (Advanced)

Wednesday, April 09, 2008  ·  2:00 PM - 3:40 PM

Ducts shouldn’t leak, particularly to outside the envelope. But, if ducts do leak, what is the real amount and energy impact? Examine the findings from two extensive field evaluations in the Midwest addressing older and newer homes. How do the duct leakage test methods (Duct BlasterTM, pressure pan and Delta Q) compare? Hear the results and learn more about the benefits and limitations of each test. Discuss the ramifications for program / building design, priorities, implementation, and estimated savings.

By attending this session, participants will:

  1. Learn about new field research comparing duct tightness versus leakage test methods and the benefits and limitations of each approach
  2. Discuss how reliable various tests for duct leakage are for determining the need to seal ducts
  3. Understand the importance of duct leakage, using the appropriate test method, and interpreting the results in setting priorities for energy saving opportunities, testing protocol, and program design

Keyword(s): Delta Q, Duct BlasterTM, duct leakage, duct sealing, duct testing, duct tightness, energy impact and savings, measured duct leakage
