PART 5 - Conditioned Vs. Unconditioned Attics
Wednesday, April 09, 2008 · 10:35 AM - 12:15 PM
Roof sheathings can be vented or unvented. Vented attics, the traditional approach, are at the heart of many building related problems including air leaks through the ceiling, ice dams, condensation, and mold problems. It is increasingly common to place the insulation and air barrier at the roof sheathing resulting in unvented roof sheathing and attic. Shingle manufacturers may not honor the warranty, code folks don’t know what to make of it, building geeks swear by it. So what’s the deal?
By attending this session, participants will
- Be able to identify what areas of an attic must be treated for a successful unvented attic
- Understand how to create a vented attic that avoids the traditional problems
- Choose between insulation and air barrier methods for insulating the roof deck
