PART 1 - Party Walls: Issues & Solutions
Tuesday, April 08, 2008 · 10:00 AM - 11:45 AM
Build, assess, and treat side-by-sides just like detached dwellings, right? Not quite. Explore the opportunities, differences, and complications posed by party walls. How do you interpret a blower door reading when much of the air is coming from the neighbor's unit? Builders often use low-rise multifamily attic and party walls as convenient distribution locations for ducting, service shafts, and unvented exhaust devices. Resulting problems include condensation, ice damming, and mold.
By attending this session, participants will
1. Identify typical party wall construction types and understand how the performance of attached dwellings differ from detached homes
2. Learn techniques to diagnose and air seal attached dwellings
3. Discuss IAQ, combustion safety, fire, and odor issues and clarify how to address these issues
Keyword(s): air sealing, combustion testing, diagnostics, flame spread, IAQ, multifamily, party walls, priorities, row houses, soundproofing, thermal defects, townhouses, worse-case depressurization
