Crawl Space Solutions: Measured Results

Southeastern homes built on wall-vented crawl space foundations suffer year-in and year-out from a variety of moisture-related failures. Since 2001, Advanced Energy has operated a controlled experiment on twelve houses in eastern North Carolina to test the impact of different closed crawl space designs on moisture and energy performance. This session will present the research findings, new crawl space code language adopted in NC, and guidelines for installers of closed crawl space systems.

By attending this session, participants will

1. Realize the drawbacks associated with ventilating crawl spaces with outside air

2. Learn the benefits of different closed crawl space designs

3. Understand building code and installation resources that help successfully implement a closed crawl space design

Keywords: crawl spaces, field research, foundations, air sealing, building envelope, codes, condensation, durability, efficiency, humidity, implementation, inspections, insulation, measured results, mechanical ventilation, moisture, mold, performance, venting
