FUND 7 - Heat Loss & Heat Gain

Friday, May 20, 2005  ·  8:30 AM - 10:10 AM

Heat Loss & Heat Gain

Understanding the basics of heat transfer (heat loss and heat gain) is essential in the comprehension of thermal characteristics and residential energy usage. We will cover the basics and give participants a strong foundation of knowledge on which to build. This is intended for those new to the energy field or for those wishing to review the fundamentals.

By attending this session, participants will

1. Learn about the two major forms of heat transfer, transmission, and air leakage

2. Understand terms such as British thermal unit (Btu), temperature difference, conduction, convection, radiation, infiltration, exfiltration, R-value, U-factor, heating degree days, cooling degree days, and internal gain

3. Explore the dynamics of heat loss and gain by discussing the driving forces behind transmission and air-leakage heat transfer, and understand how they affect heating and cooling bills

Keywords: air sealing, building envelope, fundamentals, heat transfer, heat loss, heat gain, R-values, U-factors
