MAM 08 - Using Spreadsheets: Energy Analysis & Related Tasks (Hands-on)

Monday, April 23, 2007  ·  8:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Computers are essential to our work and crunching numbers is where they really shine. Proprietary programs, though user friendly, often isolate us from the assumptions that support their processes and conclusions. Underlying these programs are basic spreadsheets that do the work and can reveal why we get the answers we do. This hands-on course will look at a variety of useful spreadsheet tools and learn to create our own.

Handouts will include a CD with open-source spreadsheets for the examples discussed. Participants should bring a laptop with Microsoft Excel or compatible spreadsheet program installed. Basic knowledge of Excel is recommended.

By attending this session, participants will

  1. Understand a variety of relevant tasks that can be accomplished with a spreadsheet
  2. Gain an understanding of the first principles upon which "black box" systems work and develop a healthy skepticism
  3. Have the confidence to design and execute basic spreadsheets to answer and support your own questions about building science
