TC&S 8 - When Building Science & Codes Conflict
Thursday, April 26, 2007 · 10:40 AM - 12:20 PM
In 2007, many code requirements involving vented crawl spaces, vented roofs, and vapor retarders expose builders to risk and result in low tolerance / durability in buildings. The typical building official is restricted to enforcing the written code. This leaves a chasm between real building performance and protecting the public as most codes should. Relevant proposals for code changes will be presented, which are under consideration by International Codes Congress (ICC).
By attending this session, participants will
- Learn how to establish and maintain productive working relationships with code officials
- Investigate reasons why science and code conflict
- Recognize the challenge and opportunity to fill the gap, and become aware of recent proposals for code changes to address some of these conflicts
