Thermal Comfort & Air Quality Controls

Thermostats have come a long way from simple on/off devices to complex comfort and energy efficiency control products. There have been extensive discussions of ventilation strategies for homes, but no ventilation strategy is effective unless the system is running. A control can turn the system on and off but when, why, and for how long? This session examines a variety of control strategies, their effectiveness, and when they are best used.

By attending this session, participants will

1. Gain an overview of thermal and ventilation system control strategies

2. Hear the pro’s and con’s of these strategies from testing and actual installations

3. Move toward an understanding of the “optimum” comfort control strategy

Keywords: airflow, air sealing, building envelope, building science, mechanical ventilation, moisture, mold, health and safety, IAQ, product selection, techniques
